Why Edu’s promotion to Arsenal sporting director is fully deserved

Arsenal have announced that Edu Gaspar has been promoted to sporting director in a signal of ambition and commitment from Premier League leaders.

The Brazilian’s promotion comes at a time when other clubs were interested in acquiring his services.

Why Edu’s promotion to sporting director is fully deserved

Last year Arsenal held back on signing a striker in January and while that may have ultimately derailed their top-four challenge, it meant they could sign Gabriel Jesus this summer. Jesus symbolizes everything Arteta and Edu expect from their new recruits: he fits the system perfectly.

Other chants, such as Gabriel Martinelli and Marquinhos, demonstrated Edu’s more specialized knowledge of Brazilian football. Martinelli, who signed for the Gunners for just £6million, has become a mainstay in the team and a huge reason why Arsenal are five points clear at the Premier League summit.

It’s a promotion that demonstrates Arsenal’s vision and commitment to him, just as they are committed to Arteta. Not all signings under Edu’s tenure have been successful, but many stand out as clear successes. The aforementioned Jesus is one, but his Manchester City team-mate Oleksandr Zinchenko is a second clear example.

The 44-year-old should be judged on how well he helped Mikel Arteta in the transfer windows and how well his signings performed: by that metric, his promotion is fully deserved. He accelerated the process of rebuilding the club and helped them rise to the top of the Premier League with his signings, rid the club of older players who had huge contracts and signed some exciting youth products to support the future of the Gunners.

Speaking to Arsenal’s website, Edu said: I’m delighted to have this new role which I see as an evolution and consolidation of the way we work. We are making good progress in all areas of our men, women and academy and we are all delighted with what can be achieved.

“I look forward to building on the hard work of so many people and helping us all grow together and be more successful, and I am grateful for the trust the club has placed in me. We are moving forward together . »
