“I’ve been coming here to look at books since I got to drive myself down,” Brown said. “I would come, see Dan, and buy all of his science fiction.
“I had started working part-time at Book Rack, and Dan knew I had started working there,” Brown said. “It was after COVID, after it reopened, and he said, ‘I might need some help here if you’re interested. “So I started going downstairs and was organizing a section and putting away a few books.
“Dan and I talked, and he saw that I wanted to do something more with myself, I wanted to do something for myself,” Brown added.
When Pekios made the offer, Brown said, “It just happened where I could make it work and I couldn’t let it slip through my fingers.”
College is not yet in the picture for Brown. He graduated from Bettendorf High School at the top of his class. At the age of 18, he and his band recorded a record, toured both coasts, and produced a music video in Arizona.
“I read non-fiction and I read science books, but I don’t like when people tell me to read something,” Brown said. “I do it myself and it sticks better. I have always been a good learner.
“I’ve done a lot of things since I graduated from high school,” he says. “My friends went to college and spent four years drinking and accumulating debt. I read more books than they have read in their entire life this week. I spent four years working, my band went on tour, and bought a bookstore.
